Story behind a gem
About Aira Gems begins with a lifelong passion for natural gemstones. My name is Lalan, and my journey into the world of gemstones started long before Aira Gems was founded.
As a young boy growing up in Sri Lanka, I was fascinated by colourful stones. While other children collected toys, I spent my time collecting pebbles with unusual colours, patterns, and shapes. I didn’t know their names or their value—I simply admired their beauty and uniqueness. Looking back, those childhood treasures were the beginning of a lifelong passion.
Whenever I had spare time, I would visit local gem-mining areas and small gemstone markets. I would stand for hours watching miners carefully search the earth for hidden treasures and observing traders buying and selling rough gemstones. I was fascinated by the stories behind every stone and the people whose lives were connected to them.
At that time, collecting gemstones and crystal specimens was purely a hobby. I wasn’t thinking about business or profit. I simply loved learning about the natural beauty of gemstones and preserving interesting mineral specimens for my personal collection.
As the years passed, my passion continued to grow. What began as childhood curiosity slowly became a deeper understanding of Sri Lanka’s rich gemstone heritage and the remarkable people who dedicate their lives to this industry.
Twelve years ago, that passion became a profession.
I founded our gemstone company in Sri Lanka and began working directly within the gemstone industry. Since then, we have been involved in gemstone mining, sourcing, cutting, and exporting precious gemstones to international markets, including Thailand, Dubai, and Italy.

As our Director of Ethical Sourcing and Quality Compliance, Agra is the vital link between Aira Gems and the heart of Sri Lanka’s gem-bearing regions. For over eight years, she has worked directly with miners and gem suppliers across the country, building relationships founded on fairness, respect, and mutual trust.
Agra oversees quality control and compliance for every gemstone that passes through Aira Gems, ensuring each piece meets our strict standards for authenticity, ethical origin, and transparency before it ever reaches a customer.
